JOSHUA
Joshua is aged 4 and a half years and has Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Six months into regular Bowen Therapy and it is hard to say what benefits Joshua has
gained from his sessions as there are so many!
At the beginning, Joshua found it very difficult
to sit still, but due to the nature of Bowen Therapy, it was able to be adapted easily to
his needs and his therapist would follow him around the room, performing a 'move' on him with
lightening speed that he didn't even notice someone had touched him! Almost immediately, I
had a calmer child on my hands.
Joshua did not appear so agitated by his life and was able
to concentrate for short periods on a task.
Within the first few sessions, Joshua appeared
to become better co-ordinated, more in control of his movements and better balanced. He sat
on a see-saw for the first time and allowed me to move it. He even sat on a normal swing
seat and had a little swing, something I thought he would not do until he was far too big
to get into a baby seat.
Joshua began tackling playground equipment with confidence that
he had never shown before. Suddenly, my frightened little mouse became an explorer of his
environment.
Communication increased soon after commencement of Bowen Therapy. Joshua has
always been keen to use Makaton signing and suddenly he was copying and making attempts
at more signs that ever and would even tell me that daddy had played 'peek-a-boo whilst
he was on the swing and it made him laugh!
The most obvious results from Bowen Therapy have
come when Joshua arrives in an agitated mood, recently due to some food intolerances,
and he has been seen to visibly relax and calm before my very eyes as therapy commences.
This change in mood can last for several days and disappears so slowly, you hardly notice.
By this time we are due for another Bowen Therapy session and Joshua will open the door and
run into the room to greet Cathy with a big smile as if to say 'I love my Bowen Therapy'.
Joshua's Mum
Ben
Ben is 15 months old. He has had 10 sessions so far. His first couple of sessions were weekly,
then he went to the fortnightly clinic.
He suffered oxygen deprivation at birth and was diagnosed at 9 months with Cerebral Palsy.
Ben's body was stiff. He locked his legs whever we tried to do anything with his head, arms or torso. His body was almost always tensed up and his hands were clenched into fists most of the time. He would strongly object whenever we tried to turn him onto his front or encourage him to try any unfamiliar movements.
We took Ben for his first Bowen session when he was just under a year old. He relaxed almost
immediately and tolerated being on his front for much longer than he had before. He even
managed to last for almost a whole hour on his front during only his third session - before
Bowen he would last a maximum of 30 seconds before crying.
On his way home in the car after the first session he opened his arms wide and grasped the
handle of his maxi-cosy with each hand - the first time he had ever done this.
The improvements we have seen since he has been attending have included:
better legs and arm control, opening up of his hands and increased dexterity, reduction in
overall stiffness, reduction in 'locking' his body, improved tolerance of different positions
and movements, improvement in chewing and eating and no longer coughs during or after food
or drink, better head control.
We can attribute the above improvements to Bowen becaused each occurred after the relevant session. I.e. if an area was concentrated on during a session, then that area would noticeably improve either immediately or in the following days
To conclude, overall Bowen has helped Ben's body to relax and his movements to become more fluid. He has better control over his body and his balance has improved significantly. On the rare occasions that Ben becomes distressed, he no longer tenses up in the way that he used to.
Ben really seems to relax and enjoy each session. We are very happy with the way he has responded
to Bowen and would strongly recommend it to others. As far as we are concerned, Ben will continue to attend
the clinic for as long as it remains beneficial to him.
